Chapter 15 – In which the Captain does his duty
And he still hadn’t got around to meeting all of the re-animated cryo-sleep guests. Or the defrosted cargo, depending on how you looked at the thing.
Of course, none of them were supposed to have been defrosted at all at this point in the journey, which was also an argument in his favour. But the captain was too honest to rely upon such specious weighting of right and wrong, true and false. He owed all guests a courtesy, and in some cases that debt was as yet unpaid — an error which had to be rectified.
And that was how he came to be taking a brisk pace along the north thoroughfare on the eighth day of the voyage. Accompanied by junior Starza officer Starr, struggling just a little to keep up with him as they strode along the upper level to the guests’ quarters.
And now, she reached out to put her hand on his arm, as he pulled ahead. “Jon. Jon,” she said, in that soft warm pretty voice of hers. Not that there was distinctly a laugh in it, but on the other hand, how could you ever describe it as not amused?
He gave her a sharp look, looking backwards at her lovely rounded face, the suddenly unexpected sharp chin, that deft dimple in it put in by a master sculptor’s thumb.
